Review: SunnyD Vodka Seltzer Purple

Bet you didn’t know there’s a boozy version of the decadent delight — er, delite — you loved as a kid, SunnyD!

Bet you didn’t know there’s another version of it, too — one that trades orange for purple.

SunnyD Vodka Seltzer Purple is, exactly as the name suggests, a seltzified version of purple drink, purportedly made with vodka, fruit juice, and — interestingly — no sugar. A 12 oz. can has only 95 calories — presuming you can finish the whole thing. I couldn’t.

I’ve had this sitting on my desk since it launched six months ago, unable to bring myself to crack it open until now. Part of my still wishes I hadn’t. The flavor is best described as a liquid nightmare: strong overtones of industrial chemicals, followed by sickly sweet grape candy and some kind of low-cal sweetener. (SunnyD says there are no artificial sweeteners, so I’m guessing this is made with stevia.)

Undrinkable yet vaguely nostalgic, it’s an experience that lingers for quite some time thanks to its monstrous and lasting finish. Not in a good way.
