Teen drinking
I could really use some perspective from other parents of teenagers.
My 17-year-old got very drunk for the first time this weekend. She became extremely emotional and said some things that really scared me—things about wishing I had never had her so I could’ve had a better life, being tired of the same life/routine, feeling like she had been hiding a lot from me, and at one point making a comment about wishing she had killed herself.
I directly asked her that night if she wanted to hurt herself and she immediately said no. The next day, completely sober and back to herself, we had a long conversation. She remembers very little of what she said and has repeatedly told me she is not depressed, does not want to die, and has not been having thoughts about dying or hurting herself.
I believe what she’s telling me, but as her mom, I’m having a hard time just forgetting the things I heard that night. I also don’t want to repeatedly question her and make her feel like I don’t believe her.
For parents who have experienced something similar with a teenager: How did you handle the days afterward? Did alcohol ever make your teen say extremely dark things that they genuinely didn’t feel when sober? How did you find the balance between taking it seriously and not panicking or hovering over them afterward?
I’m not looking for a diagnosis—just some parent-to-parent perspective from people who have been through something similar.
