Review: 2025 Quinta da Fonte Souto Florao White

Depending on the time of publication, we will have passed the one-year mark since trying the 2024 vintage of Portugal/Symington’s Quinta da Fonte Souto Florao White. Not much has changed across the Portuguese landscape (save perhaps a new label that buries “Branco” description in favor of the more internationally friendly “White.” There’s still the balance of old world and new, still the same opportunity to dine at amazing spots and enjoy stunning art from some of the world’s most original voices. Ronaldo and Bruno have yet to win a World Cup.

So, too, goes the wine world of Portugal, which hasn’t experienced any seismic shifts. There are still enjoyable options in plentiful abundance. Today, we’re checking to see if Quinta still retains a spot on the roster of quality options at a sensible price point, or if this white blend from Alto Alentejo has been downgraded, needing to find a seat on the bench.

This 75%/25% blend of Arinto and Verdelho offers aromas of white flowers and grated lemon zest with a touch of nut brittle as it evolves. On the palate, grapefruit and lemon zest seize nearly all control, filibustering from first sip to last with minimal interest in yielding to anything else in the blend. It’s medium-bodied but “soft” isn’t in its vocabulary: it has edge and the acidic equivalent of good posture, but never crosses into something aggressive. Orange blossom shows up on the finish, but a mild touch of salinity cuts towards the conclusion, keeping the whole wine approachable. This year’s vintage has fully retained its charm and quality, and remains one of the better affordable Portuguese white wines available.
