Review: Four Peaks Kilt Lifter

Four Peaks Brewing, based in Tempe, Arizona, got its start 30 years ago, making it an OG craft brewery. Kilt Lifter was the beer that put Four Peaks on the map, and it remains dominant today: Over the past three decades, Four Peaks has sold more than 800,000 barrels of it, or 200 million pints.

Nevertheless we’ve never covered it. In fact, I’ve never even tasted it until now. So, congrats on 30 years! Here’s a short review.

Ruddy and nutty, Kilt Lifter evokes the tartan on its can design with a bold attack of malt and well-toasted bread, landing somewhere between a savory slice of buttered toast and a breakfast pastry. A gently smokiness leans things toward the former, though the rounded body, a bit gummy at times, always threatens to push the experience back the other way. A finish that touches on vanilla caramel and baked apples makes for a nice counterpoint to some of the warmer elements in the mix. Definitely a winning pick for a cool afternoon.
