Am I the only one who thinks wine culture can be weirdly intimidating

I’ve been thinking about this lately because it keeps happening. I’m not new to wine. I drink it fairly often. I’ll bring a bottle to dinner, order it at restaurants, buy one if I’m having friends over. But if you asked me why I picked any of those bottles, I’d struggle to give you a real answer. Most of the time I’m relying on something random. A label I’ve seen before. A region I’ve heard mentioned. A recommendation from months ago that I barely remember. Or I’ll quickly Google it while pretending I’m reading the wine list. What’s funny is that I don’t really feel this way with other hobbies.If I wanted to learn coffee, I know where to start. Cooking? Plenty of beginner resources. Photography? Nobody expects you to know everything on day one. Wine feels different. It’s almost like there’s this invisible expectation that everyone already understands the language. So people fake confidence instead of asking questions. Maybe I’m overthinking it, but I feel like wine would be way more approachable if people talked about it like a skill you build instead of something you’re either born understanding or not.
