Suddenly (literally) cannot smell alcohol anymore

A friend invited me to drink a new bottle of alcohol, but recoiled and remarked about how strongly it smelled (“like isopropyl alcohol”), although I only smelled a bit of the flavoring. A few days later it made me curious, so I opened a bottle of my 50% rum, which usually has an extreme off-putting odor that I can’t stand, but all I smell now is the spices used for the rum and zero hint of alcohol. Has anyone dealt with this before? Very perplexing and sudden.
