Review: Teremana Tequila, Complete Lineup (Updated 2026)
2020 saw a raft of celebrity-branded wines and spirits, but none was arguably bigger than Teremana, which is backed by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Teremana is a pot-distilled tequila made with 100% Highlands agave. It’s currently available in blanco, reposado, and anejo expressions.
We received all three (eventually) for review. Below you’ll find our original coverage of the blanco and reposado releases from 2020, and 2026 updates for all three expressions.
All are 80 proof (and also available in both 750ml and 1 liter formats). NOM 1613.
Teremana Tequila Blanco (2020) Review
The nose here is immediately a bit plain — vegetal, muddy, and a bit sweaty, though it’s at least short of off-putting. The palate opens up a bit, initially showing notes of white pepper and some lemon. There’s a gentle sweetness rolling through the body, but a funky, heavily earthy note — not really like agave but more like damp dirt — is never far away, invariably rushing back to meet you. The pungent nose is hard to shake throughout, eventually settling into a note more akin to green beans than fresh agave, muddying the entire experience. This is usable as a mixer only. Teremana Tequila Blanco (2026) Review
Almost six years later, this tequila hasn’t changed appreciably, but it has at least improved. While the nose remains rather simple, it’s not nearly as muddy or pungent as we originally experienced. A big note of roasted agave and subtle undertones of stewed green bell pepper make for a monotone bouquet, but there’s an inviting balance of sweetness. On the palate, that measured sweetness remains the highlight with the agave still presenting an overly earthy character that dulls its complexity and amplifies the ethanol. A bit of black pepper and lemon oil on the midpalate adds some depth, but the finish is muddled with a mix of bright, nondescript citrus and green notes that once again tend more toward canned vegetables than agave. Teremana Tequila Reposado (2020) Review
Oddly, no aging information is provided, though we do know the spirit is rested in ex-bourbon barrels. Reposados usually find their aromatics tempered by barrel time, but this expression doesn’t let up on that funky, vegetal nose, though here more of a black pepper note comes through. The palate does show some of the sweetness one expects from a reposado, but not an overwhelming amount. Still, it’s enough to temper the heavy earthiness that the blanco shows, and as it develops in the glass, some butterscotch and lemon elements begin to dominate, giving the finish more of a welcome approachability. Teremana Tequila Reposado (2026) Review
There is still no specific aging information for this reposado. Conjecture on the internet seems to coalesce around the two-month minimum, which I tend to suspect given the color. The aroma is once again improved in this revisit with that vegetal funk subdued by the oak and complementing the cooked agave notes with a balanced layer of light brown sugar and butterscotch. Notes of white pepper and subtle lime zest add a bit of energy to what is an otherwise simple but pleasant aroma. As with our first taste, the palate shows a measured, wood-driven sweetness, not nearly the syrupy sweet character of some other reposados. And while restrained, it still manages to soften some of the earthier edges of the blanco with silky caramelized sugars and hints of citrus, building into a warm finish that lingers with a little cracked pepper and agave syrup. Teremana Tequila Anejo (2026) Review
Even though Teremana’s anejo expression launched at the end of 2021, it took us a little while (OK, a long while) to run down a sample. Like the reposado, we don’t get any specific details on the maturation but again judging from the color I would venture somewhere close to the 12-month minimum. The barrel notes on the nose are not appreciably different from the reposado, but they dominate even more the earthy agave that should be somewhere underneath it all. Notes of toffee, vanilla buttercream, Demerara sugar, and a touch of coffee bean all show, once again, a welcome, balanced sweetness, but aside from undertones of agave syrup, there’s not much more than oak in the mix. The palate adds bigger butterscotch flavors than the reposado, but it somehow comes across a bit thinner. Hints of lime peel and agave add some complexity before washing out into a gentle, medium-length finish of vanilla icing and white pepper. Exceedingly approachable, it’s the best sipper of the trio, but the reposado is more interesting. -DB B / $40 [BUY IT NOW FROM FROOTBAT]
