Review: 2024 Attems Pinot Grigio Ramato Friuli DOC
With summer in full swing, every bar needs a healthy stock of rose wine to keep folks cool, hydrated, and happy.
Rather than the usual Provence or California roses, consider this offering from Attems, a rose made from pinot grigio in Italy’s Friuli region. Ramato is a wine style exclusive to Friuli pinot grigio, wherein grape skins are allowed to make contact with the juice for a short while, infusing it with an ostensible copper color (which is what rame means in Italian).
This 2024 release is extremely light on the orange-ness. In the bottle it’s a light peach color. In the glass it’s virtually indistinguishable from a white wine. Nevertheless, you’ll note the impact on the palate, where a stronger peach and apricot note awaits — bold enough that you might assume you’re sipping a viognier here. Crisp notes of lemon mingle with melon and some gentle, saline-driven acidity, together offering a vaguely spa-like but cleansing quality on the moderate-length finish.
