Review: Casamigos RTD Margaritas – Classic Lime and Spicy

Casamigos is the latest tequila brand to jump into the ready-to-drink space, this time with two bottles timed to take advantage of World Cup madness.

The two expressions — Classic Lime and Spicy — are made with Casamigos blanco tequila, orange liqueur, lime juice, and natural flavors, and both come in either 750ml or 375ml bottles. Both are bottled at 41 proof.

Casamigos Classic Lime Margarita Review

An artificiality endures on this expression, hampered by a rough, powdery lime character that pairs fitfully with the slightly earthy but otherwise not particularly distinguishable tequila underneath. A bit dusty and leathery in the middle, the concoction shifts gears soon enough to remain largely driven by that pungent lime character, the sweetener coming across as a touch saccharine. B-

Casamigos Spicy Margarita Review

The spice here comes across akin to the addition of a few drops of habanero, which, if nothing else, serves to mask the fake lime character to a degree. It’s not overly hot — just a slight rush of hot sauce that is quickly tempered by the coolness of the drink (you are sipping this on the rocks, right?). With the lime tempered, the tequila is more evident, but only to a point, touches of earthy vegetation and a mild jalapeno note clearer as the finish arrives. My preference of the two, though fans of peppery cocktails won’t really appreciate it. B
