How long does vermouth really last?

I like a Manhattan or a martini occasionally but I’ve heard vermouth is not good after a few weeks, is that accurate? If I keep it in the fridge and pump the air out of it with one of those hand wine pumps will that extend the quality? Is my premise totally wrong?
