Review: 2019 Rodney Strong Vineyards Symmetry Red Wine Sonoma County

Rodney Strong is one of the old guard reliable producers of Sonoma, California, with a winery that dates back to 1959. Today it continues to crank out wines across a range of prices and styles, and today we take a look at a recent release (though not the most recent release, which is vintage 2021) of its flagship Symmetry bottling, a Bordeaux style blend.

Formerly an Alexander Valley offering, Symmetry is now notated on the bottle as a Sonoma County designate.

I haven’t been able to find the varietal breakdown of this wine, but it is traditionally very cabernet sauvignon-heavy Bordeaux style blend. This 2019 is soft and quite gentle, aromatic layers of pencil lead informed by chocolate and rust, introducing a gentle vein of metallic iron. Blueberry and blackberry notes build on the palate after the moderately sharp attack fades, giving the wine a not insignificant sweetness. Increasingly chewy as it develops, the finish is slightly gummy and chocolatey, more milk than dark, hinting at coconut and a tart cherry note on the finish.

It’s ready to drink now.

A- / $70
