Review: Glenmorangie Harrison Ford Limited Edition
If you remember that Sean Connery played Indiana Jones’s father, then the idea of Harrison Ford stumping for Scotchmaker Glenmorangie makes more sense than you might think. Now the spokesperson for the brand, and the star of a series of ads for the whisky, Ford is putting his stamp on the liquid itself with his own “co-directed” limited edition bottling, one which bears his name.
Per the company: “Smooth and elegant with an intriguing bite, the whisky gets Ford’s trademark, no-frills seal of approval: ‘It’s very nice.’”
The production details are a bit buried in the press information, but read on:
Harrison Ford’s namesake limited edition reflects everything the actor enjoys about Glenmorangie, which has been crafting its elegant whisky in the Scottish Highlands for over 180 years. The actor first met Dr Bill Lumsden whilst filming at the distillery, where he spent time introducing Ford to various casks to understand his flavour preferences. In the months that followed, Dr Bill sent many more samples across the Atlantic, and the pair fine-tuned its layers of flavour until they settled on the final recipe. Uniting classic bourbon cask-aged Glenmorangie with a parcel of rare whisky finished in toasted Portuguese red wine casks, this whisky contrasts Glenmorangie’s elegant style with an intriguing, tangy character.
So: Standard bourbon barrel-aged Glenmo with a finish of Portuguese red wine (not Port). No age statement. Let’s try it.
Glenmorangie Harrison Ford Limited Edition Review
Glenmo’s house style is on full display here, and the whisky never rocks the boat too much. While gently honeyed on the nose, there’s definitely more of a buzzy/boozy zip here, with a toasty oak aroma emerging with time in glass. Things get quite nutty with time, with almonds infused with citrus zest.
The palate continues the theme, particularly the citrus and honey notes, which are delightfully sunny on the jump. The body takes on a peachier quality as it develops, the fruit seeing hints of cinnamon and nutmeg emerge. Again there’s a hint of alcohol-driven punch as the finish arrives and the fruit fades, but waves of vanilla and caramel keep everything in check.
Fans of Glenmorangie’s permanent line will find this far less out-there than many of Dr. Bill’s creations, but there’s absolutely nothing not to like about it (except maybe the price). It is, to coin a phrase, very nice.
93 proof.
