Review: Dos Hombres Tequila Blanco
In 2022, we covered the launch of Dos Hombres, a then exclusively mezcal brand backed by actors Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul. At the time, we tipped our hat to the Breaking Bad stars for the super cool way they chose to focus on mezcal instead of the more ubiquitous and celebrity-saturated tequila category. But it was only a matter of time. This spring Dos Hombres jumped into the very crowded tequila game. To their credit, the brand is still going about things coolly with the same craft and impressive transparency that they apply to their mezcals.
We received a sample of their inaugural blanco tequila, which is produced in the village of Amatitan at Tequilera TAP Distillery from 100% blue weber agave by veteran Maestro Julio Cova who came out of retirement to guide the Dos Hombres project. The agave is crushed using a roller mill, cooked in a combination of autoclave (75%) and brick ovens (25%), fermented for an unusually long 72-96 hours, and then double distilled in stainless steel and copper. It rests for 30 days before bottling. Thoughts follow.
Dos Hombres Tequila Blanco Review
Tequila may have been a comparatively boring move for the Breaking Bad boys, but damn if they didn’t nail this blanco. The nose shows some of the most depth I’ve encountered in an unaged tequila with creamy notes of sweet, roasted agave and cinnamon frosting. Undertones of fresh lime zest and grilled lemon add energy and brightness, and with time to open, accents of pink peppercorn further enhance an already warm and enticing aroma.
The palate is crisp and light with notes of mint and white pepper. The agave is unusually fresh in contrast to the typical roasted note you often find in tequila. In place of the traditional agave syrup or roasted pulp notes, this is noticeably brighter and more tropical. The midpalate is crisp and floral with orange oil and rosewater that transitions to freshly grated cinnamon and clove on a long, gently peppery finish. It works great in a classic tequila cocktail like a margarita with that crisp profile working wonders for balance. But it’s almost a shame to mix with it.
