Review: 2022 Pacher Hof Sylvaner Alte Reben
Alto Adige occupies one a curious corner of Italian wine. Tucked into Italy’s far north against the Austrian border, it carries a distinctly dual identity, shaped by Italian and Germanic influence in language, culture, and winemaking. Alpine peaks dominate the landscape, but the vineyards benefit from a surprisingly varied climate, with daytime sun and warm temperatures balanced by nighttime cooling swings. Elevation does much of the work here, allowing grapes to ripen fully while retaining the acidity. The region has a reputation largely for white varieties like Pinot Grigio, Gewürztraminer, and Kerner, alongside reds. Pacher Hof has roots stretching back centuries in the Eisack Valley. Deeply tied to its alpine setting, the estate focuses on small-production whites, such as the one we’re trying today.
There’s an immediate floral lift of white blossom, accompanied by a note of melon and toasted hazelnuts to lend warmth without getting too excessive. As the wine opens further, a stony mineral edge asserts itself, helping to draw the sweeter elements into focus. On the palate, there’s ripe apricot, pear and lemon zest layered against Alpine herbs to keep things moving along nicely. A gentle acidity gives shape to the fruit while carrying the wine into a finish that does not hurry to unfold, but reveals more detail than anticipated. Served with a light chill, it becomes more composed, particularly alongside lighter dishes that allow its nuance to show off.
