Review: 2020 Frescobaldi Tenuta CastelGiocondo Brunello di Montalcino

By the time Brunello di Montalcino was taking shape in the 1800s, Tenuta CastelGiocondo was already on the ground as one of the first estates involved, so the Frescobaldi-owned estate has been there from the beginning in a way that counts. The label, lifted from a Simone Martini fresco, only sharpens the point: this is a wine with lineage, armor, and a sense of history that leaves other estates a bit envious.

The nose begins the way Brunello fans would anticipate: vanilla and dark cherry, but not in the shouty, overdecorated way. With time in the glass, it settles into leather, espresso, and a warm cedar note, providing a polished seriousness usually reserved for leather chairs, wood paneling and a room of books. The fruit stays on the restrained side, which suits it perfectly: nothing here is really reaching for attention.

On the palate, the shape of the wine becomes clearer: there is weight, but also enough control to keep it from feeling bulky. Cranberry and that dark cherry note sit firmly at the core, surrounded by dried tobacco, minerality, and savory blend leaning toward black tea and clove without becoming overtly savory. The tannins have presence and authority but stay refined, the oak adding enough grip to sustain it. The finish keeps that composed mood going, trailing into notes of blood orange, and bergamot with some minerality as it fades.

There is lovely depth here, and the floral element adds lift without undermining the gravity. More importantly, the wine has already aged quite well in the bottle, with softer acidity making the whole thing feel settled and ready to be enjoyed now. It is certainly not out of the question to put this away for another year. However, for those unwilling to wait, there’s already quite a lot to enjoy.
