Review: 2020 Quinta de Fonte Souto Tinto Alentejo DOC

We’ve covered the white wines of Quinta da Fonte Souto on many occasions. The red, “tinto,” releases, not so much. Here’s a fresh look at the 2020 vintage of this Portuguese table wine, made with Alicante Bouschet, Alfrocheiro, and Syrah.

The intense color of the wine suggests a powerful depth and pungency, but the aromatics have a surprising complexity. Earthy notes give way in short order to bold blackberry and black cherry notes. The palate has all that black fruit, but it’s backed up with touches of hibiscus and gentle, brown sugar sweetness that tempers the underlying tannins. The structure of the wine is aggressive at present, suggesting some tempering time in cellar might help calm the beast, its pushy anise and currant notes gripping things tightly — at least for now.
