Review: Jameson Triple Triple Irish Whiskey Bourbon, Sherry & Chestnut Casks

All expressions of Jameson are already triple distilled. With this release it adds three types of aging/finishing. Triple Triple, get it?

Aging and finishing includes two familiar cask types — bourbon and sherry, both already used by the Irish operation — plus a new and unusual one — chestnut casks, a first for the brand. There’s very little info available on how long any of the spirit spends in any of the cask types, though it is noted that the bourbon and sherry casks are used for primary aging, with a portion of the aged whiskey finished in chestnut. That’s all to be expected for a $25 bottle, I suppose.

Note that there’s another Triple Triple on the market — featuring sherry, bourbon, and Malaga wine casks — which is a travel retail exclusive.

Jameson Triple Triple Irish Whiskey Bourbon, Sherry & Chestnut Casks Review

The softness endemic to most Irish whiskeys is well-evidenced here, the nose a mix of vanilla, almond nougat, gentle orange cream, and understated florals. Of these, the vanilla dominates most often, here set against a backdrop of shortbread. A hint of honeyed peanut butter lingers.

The palate is surprisingly nutty, with bolder almond notes than expected, evoking amaretto at times, at least up front. Milk chocolate, caramel, and vanilla are all in attendance, the whiskey venturing into notes of coconut and more of a toasted almond character as the body develops. Nutty but not overtly sweet, the whiskey never builds to any particular power and presents an even gentler face than rack Jameson already offers. A rush of marzipan, a big bite of an Almond Joy candy bar, and a medium-length finish see things fade to black — quickly inviting additional sips. All told, it’s delightful, if easygoing to a fault.

It’s also a steal at just $25 a bottle, drinking lovely on its own but also working as a solid choice as the key spirit in offbeat dessert drinks ranging from Irish carajillos to chocolatey martinis. Get some.
