Review: Smokehead 15 Years Old

Since we started keeping up with Smokehead a few years back, the heavy metal-inspired, Islay whisky brand from Ian Macleod Distillers has eschewed conventional age-statements in favor of a lineup more focused on unique cask finishings. In fact, age statements have never really been Smokehead’s thing with the one notable exception of an 18-year-old limited edition way back in 2010.

In late 2025, Smokehead quietly delivered another age-stated limited edition. This single malt clocks in at 15-years-old, which is a significant jump compared to the rest of the lineup that is rumored to hover somewhere in the 8-10 year range. We don’t get a lot of details about maturation, but presumably this whisky ages entirely in ex-bourbon casks. Of note, the website specifies that it spent all 15 years aging on Islay, which likely takes Caol Ila out of the running for potential sources since most of their whisky is aged off island. The timid abv won’t likely get peatheads overly excited, but Smokehead has managed to impress at similar proofs in the past. Let’s check it out.

Smokehead 15 Years Old Review

The nose is hefty for the proof with an initial wave of trademark peat smoke underpinned with a mix of charred pineapple, grilled lemon, treacle, and a subtler toasted marshmallow note. As it opens, things step inside the coastal cask house with salty and sweet notes of old oak, iodine, and worn leather. A few drops of water coax out a little vanilla and baked apple.

The palate is effortless and approachable but perhaps a bit more assertive than I would have anticipated for the abv. The peat is woven into the sip with silky precision and a more mature smoke dimension than younger expressions—less bonfire and fresh wood smoke, more smoldering embers. Waves of black pepper, clove, and smoked sea salt follow, accentuated by an oily texture. Mid-palate, the whisky reveals its age a bit more with dark toffee, barley sugar, and walnut skins. There’s also a citrus lift—grapefruit peel and bitter orange—that cuts through the richness and keeps everything in welcome tension.

The finish is generous and warming with more black pepper, dark chocolate, and a hint of coffee grounds. That coastal saltiness persists at the edges, alongside a simmering spice and fading notes of vanilla cream and well-baked angel food cake. It’s a big step up from the classic, non age-stated Smokehead Original, still boldly peaty but far more composed with an impressive depth of flavor. Even peatheads need an easy sipper every now and then, and this one does the trick. And at an impressive price point.

86 proof.
