Review: Tincup Bourbon 10 Years Old
Tincup continues to confuse with dueling releases of its American Whiskey and Bourbon lines — both with and without age statements, including releases at 6 and 10 years old. Today we’re looking at an additional link in that collection of whiskeys, Tincup Bourbon at 10 years of age.
Like the NAS Tincup bourbon, this is Indiana distillate from MGP, though details on mashbill or mashbills are limited with this expression. The age — 10 years old — is what we do know, however, along with Tincup’s famous Colorado-based proofing and bottling.
Tincup Bourbon 10 Years Old Review
It’s hard to find much fault with the presentation here, which offers a nose of spiced apples in syrup, a surprising punch of cloves, and a layer of toasted almonds that feels like it’s evolved from a creamier and more straightforward peanut butter character that the NAS Tincup bourbon lays on a bit thick.
The spice, big with cloves, continues on the palate, which is quite peppery and rich with menthol, turning almost smoky at times. Lip-smackingly approachable, the whiskey shows off a greatest hits of bourbondom, with vanilla and caramel winding toward a reprise of fruit — again big on apples, laced heavily with baking spice.
Fans of spice-forward bourbons will love what Tincup has accomplished here, though the finish takes the foot off the gas and lets you off the hook, leaving behind a quite soothing and supple whiskey, creamy with more vanilla and smears of nut butter.
