Review: 2022 Agricola Querciabella Mongrana Rosso DOC

Querciabella crafts Mongrana from a blend of native Sangiovese grapes with non-native Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon in the Maremma region of Tuscany. It’s a low-cost expression designed to be a more affordable counterpart to its $300 Gran Selezione Chianti Classico. Let’s give it a whirl.

Rather raisiny and redolent of dried cherries from the start, this rather restrained wine keeps things close to the vest. Earthy and drying, notes of tea leaf are dominant, though everything feels a bit thinner than expected. The finish finally perks things up with blueberry and a slight balsamic quality, but it remains a bit green and drying as it concludes. Altogether it remains approachable if a bit too simplistic for its own good.

B / $25
