Review: 2023 Quinta Nova Reserva Terroir Red Blend
Douro’s designation as Wine Enthusiast’s 2025 International Wine Region of the Year feels like a moment where North American wine drinkers decided to move from the comfortable aisles of their wine shop to notice the new terrain taking shape. For decades, Douro was framed primarily through the lens of Port: dowdy, obstinate, and bound to a particular vision. However, the region has quietly developed a different sort of reputation, one defined by wines that go beyond the predictable.
Submitted as evidence for a case study, Quinta Nova’s Reserva Terroir Red draws from some of Portugal’s most respected red varietals: 35% Touriga Nacional, 35% Touriga Franca, 15% Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), and 15% Tinto Cão. It’s a quartet of grapes known for depth, structure, and complexity, rewarding drinkers willing to permit some space to unfurl. Carrying most of the weight here is Touriga Nacional, a franchise player for Portugal, which provides richness and aromatics; Touriga Franca adds finesse; Tinta Roriz brings the spice and Tinto Cão, rarely the loudest grape in the room, contributes mild minerality.
It presents with a concentrated blackberry and black-plum core that highlights the darker fruits without ever feeling heavy. Wood aging plays a subtle supporting role, with nine months in second-use French oak and additional aging time in cement to keep the fruit bright. As it evolves, a touch of burnt toast peeks up from underneath. Lively acidity lifts the darker notes, and granite minerality maintains a subtle but consistent presence throughout. The tannins are purposeful but never harsh, softening as the wine opens and revealing threads of spice and herbs, likely from the Tinto Cão. The finish lingers, with the darker fruit influence remaining amplified while other nuances slowly diminish. Quinta Nova has developed an ample, complex red blend, putting on display exactly why the region is earning such acclaim. It feels less like a victory lap and more like a prelude for what’s next.
