Review: Herdade do Peso 2020 Parcelas Red and 2021 Revelado Red

One of our favorite corners of Europe is Portugal’s Alentejo (ah-len-tay-zhoo) region. It’s a vast, sunlit expanse where an impressive number of varietals form a patchwork of grapes grown in a diverse array of climates and altitudes. Alentejo has a knack for adaptability: it can produce wines that feel like luxury without draining bank accounts, or easygoing bottles that overdeliver for their price. There’s a democratic charm on display, as if the region’s growers demand that great wine should be accessible to everyone. Today’s focus is Herdade do Peso, an estate now approaching its third decade of operations guided by the Guedes family and the Sogrape team.

2020 Herdade do Peso Parcelas Red Alentejo DOC Review

Drawn from two small, select parcels of Alicante Bouschet and Cabernet Sauvignon from Herdade’s top vines. On the nose, this red blend is mildly brooding, with bursts of blueberry and dark plum, underscored by a touch of spice and a faint herbal thread, adding lift. This profile runs throughout with a dense but refined texture, with tannins and acidity that are firm but far from harsh. Through that, there’s always a sneaking sense this was built to last, one to age for a few years. Decanting it now or tucking it away is a win-win proposition. Whatever the timetable, this is an elegant wine that knows its strength but never feels the need to overcompensate.  A / $65

2021 Herdade do Peso Revelado Red Alentejo DOC Review

From the sun-soaked Vidigueira region, this wine opens with a bright burst of plum and cassis before settling into deeper, more intriguing territory. As it stretches out in the glass, layers of dark chocolate, nutmeg, and anise begin to surface, each note taking a turn before drifting back into the mix. A faint wisp of campfire smoke lingers at the edges, tempering the warmth of the baking spices and adding just the right amount of complexity. The darker fruit stays constant and confident from start to finish, and helps to anchor the overall experience. It’s already a fine match for a hearty, indulgent meal, but give it another year or two and it’ll likely reward the wait with even greater depth and poise. B+ / $25
