Why are 1.75L bottles of liquor LESS expensive than 750ml?

I was shopping for Vodka today and 1.5L was LESS expensive (by $1.00) than the same brand 750. This has happened to me before with gin too. These are name brand, not store brand spirits. Anyone understand why? I know it’s “marketing” but I’d like a more thorough explanation than that.
