Reviewe: Glasvin Parr Wine Glass
Glasvin is a boutique stemware company that recently launched a partnership with well-known sommelier/winemaker Raj Parr. Two years ago that partnership yielded a wine glass called the RAJ, and now Glasvin is back with a second collab, naturally named the Parr. Per Glasvin, “This second collaboration is a refined response to those who loved the RAJ but wanted something slightly more durable for everyday use — without compromising on elegance or wine performance.”
Glasvin sent us a pair of the handblown, lead-free glasses to review, which I’ve been testing with all kinds of wines for weeks.
The Parr is a surprisingly squat glass, just 7 inches tall and with a width of 2.8 inches. The short stature is great: It fits easily in the dishwasher, without risk of hitting the “ceiling” during the wash cycle. The stem is thin and delicate, as is the glass itself — and yet it feels plenty tough during cleaning.
I love the fat bowl of the glass, which really helps to concentrate aromas and allows for vigorous swirling without risk of spills. It simply looks very elegant, despite lacking the oversize ostentatiousness of the monster Riedel glasses that I never, ever use.
What don’t I like about this glass? Just one thing: The mouth just isn’t quite big enough. It’s fine if you want to stick your nose in it, but when it’s time to sip, the top edge of the lip hits the tip of my nose, making for an awkward experience. It’s also impossible to drink from the glass while your nose is inside the bowl, which is my preferred means of experiencing both palate and aroma at the same time.
That aside, while I still gravitate to the $39/pair Riedel Ouverture White Wine Glass as my everyday wine-sipping vessel, I still grab the Parr from time to time, especially if the dishwasher is getting full. At $69/pair they aren’t cheap, but they’re well short of being outrageously expensive.
