Drinking culture and young peoples
Anecdotal but I skew younger than the average redditor in these comments but I think constant surveillance could be a factor. When I was in high school, my best friend would throw parties. Of the 30 or so that would show up (small school), I’d say 15 or less drank. The other people had weed pens or chose to smoke instead, if at all. Of those that didn’t drink were on high school softball, soccer or football teams that the coaches would straight up boot you if they heard you were drinking. And it’s not like these were ragers by any means, but the threat of being recorded and it being sent to your mom, coach, principal in less than a second scared the shit out of my classmates, so maybe with their first experience of drinking socially being tainted by fear of retribution by superiors, it makes sense that it would transfer to adulthood. So consider a teenager/young adult who was terrified of being found out for drinking from ages 16-20, they’re just supposed to be totally lax about going to a bar as soon as they’re 21? Just my 2 cents as someone who prefers alcohol to cannabis but wholly understands why weed is the better alternative for people my age (23)
