Does alcohol really make people say things they don’t believe?

I don’t drink a lot, but when I do, I find myself getting more honest as my inhibitions lower. I can’t imagine just making shit up and saying things I don’t believe deep down.

I’m thinking of situations like Mel Gibson getting drunk and complaining how Jews are the cause of all wars and shit… he blamed it on the alcohol but I have a really hard time believing that would just come out of nowhere unless part of him deep down believed it right?

There have been many other examples of high profile people saying awful things when drunk and blaming it on alcohol, but it just doesn’t track to me. Sure, my drunk thoughts and feelings might be exaggerated, not very well thought out, or jumbled, but I’ve never had a vile opinion just slip out of nowhere.

I guess my question is, aside from thoughts coming out sloppily or unfinished, do people actually say things that are the complete opposite of what they really believe deep down when they drink? And if so, how does that 180 even happen?
