Review: Wyoming Whiskey Buffalo Bill Cody Bourbon
If the “most interesting man in the world” was real, he would probably look a lot like Buffalo Bill Cody. At the dawn of the 20th century, the showman was arguably the most famous person on earth. His legendary Wild West show introduced the world to the places and peoples of the American frontier, and when he died in 1917 cities and parks were named for him, kings and presidents mourned his passing. And now he’s getting a whiskey.
Wyoming Whiskey continues its celebration of all things western with this newest limited edition in honor of Buffalo Bill. We don’t know the specific mashbill for this bourbon, but it is aged six years, made with Wyoming-grown grains, and blended from just 26 barrels. And it’s exclusive to Wyoming, so if what you read below sounds appealing, I would recommend pointing your wagon west sometime soon.
Wyoming Whiskey Buffalo Bill Cody Bourbon Review
The nose is classic Wyoming Whiskey offering with top notes of saddle leather and new boots underpinned with just enough sweetness to keep that earthy hallmark from skewing too dry. Notes of dark cherry and cocoa powder give way with time in the glass to Cheerwine and a little coffee bean.
The palate is a bit uncharacteristic for the distillery with an unusually bright entry of lemon drops and sugared peels that nicely complements generous undertones of buttery toffee and cinnamon candies. It’s light on the palate but not thin with a pleasant, gingery warmth that simmers across the sip. On the midpalate, a bit of nuttiness and barrel char, reminiscent of burnt almond torte, offers a nice contrast to the initial sweetness before a silky finish of stroopwafel, fruit cocktail in light syrup, and damp oak. Not a big departure from the Wyoming Whiskey house style but different enough to stand out as a limited release. Buffalo Bill famously gave up drinking late in life, but the younger cowboy would have surely enjoyed this one.
