Book Review: The Mixology Way: Classic Cocktail Recipes to Master the Art of Mixology
The immediate and impactful thing about Lucas Tubiana’s The Mixology Way: Classic Cocktail Recipes to Master the Art of Mixology that catches the reader’s eye is illustrator Yannis Varoutsikos’ gorgeous artwork accompanying each recipe. The minimalist design, sharp color swatches for each ingredient, and tight recipe layout are the sort of treats that stand out when casually thumbing through this book in your local shop. I would wager money they would sell like hotcakes on Etsy if redesigned using poster dimensions, suitable for framing on an empty wall.
This isn’t to diminish Tubiana’s accomplishments of writing the book, far from it. He does an incredibly satisfying job of spelling out the fundamentals in an informal way that is highly approachable and free of jargon, which may fly over the heads of newcomers. When things increase in difficulty (mildly), there are step-by-step photographs to follow, arranged in such a way that one must make an aggressive effort to get things wrong. With 100 cocktail recipes, there is something for every occasion and taste, keeping the reader immersed in learning the classics, along with discussions on the necessity of proper tools, ice, and learning how to cut garnishes correctly with precision.
New paths in the world of mixology are not forged in The Mixology Way, and the expert or mid-level bartender in your life may find this to be familiar (but aesthetically pleasing) terrain, and could serve as a nice reference point for those recipes not already committed to muscle memory. However, those dipping their toes in the waters of making cocktails for the first time, this is an enjoyable, delightful map to utilize. If well-designed things are your love language, this will certainly hit the spot.
