Review: High Ground Estate Vodka
Minden Mill Distilling in Minden, Nevada doesn’t just make whiskey. Like many other craft distillers it also produces vodka, this one made from 100% local estate rye grown right in the high desert of Nevada.
Let’s give it a try.
High Ground Estate Vodka Review
It’s a quality vodka, heavy with character but not overwhelming in any way. Aromatics of toasted grains and sesame set up a perfectly appropriate nose for a vodka that’s made from rye, leaning into a gentle note of white pepper and a bit of saline that gives the vodka, paradoxically, a bit of a coastal vibe.
Slightly doughy and clearly grainy on the palate, the bread-like quality continues here, though it doesn’t evoke the spice of rye as much as the nose does. The moderately creamy texture provides a complementary body, amplifying lingering notes of vanilla custard, nutmeg, and baked apples. A gentle banana note on the finish works with the cereal notes up top, giving the vodka a bit of a banana bread consistency.
High Ground isn’t a classic “crisp and clean” vodka but the character it has feels intentional and appropriate for the terroir and the producer. Skip it for martini night but hang onto a bottle for long drinks.
