Review: 15 Stars Three Ports Bourbon

This new blend from the upscale sourcing operation at 15 Stars at starts with 9- and 15-year-old Kentucky bourbons, then finishes them in three kinds of Port barrels — tawny, ruby, and white. I can’t think of any time I’ve heard of such a finish, so it’s already an intriguing proposition from the start.

15 Stars Three Ports Bourbon Review

The nose is certainly out there and Port-like; though it’s not overtly raisiny, the whiskey showcases tons of brown sugar, chocolate syrup, and maple — a very sweet beginning that opens the door to aromas of cherry preserves, plums, and purple grapes (though think grape soda rather than fresh fruit). A little barrel char works its way into the mix given some time in glass, but this serves to temper some of the upfront sweetness — which, to be fair, may be a bit much for some classic bourbon fans.

The palate doesn’t stray far from what the nose connotes, showcasing a stronger grape character, more cherry, plum, and finally some raisin as it lingers on the tongue. There’s still plenty of sugar here, more than plenty, the finish sliding toward flambeed banana, guava, and notes of gingerbread — some spice finally coming into play. If there was ever a whiskey to exude a fruitcake character, this is it.

I love sweeter, fruitier whiskeys (and Port wine) and even I found Three Ports to be pushing the envelope on that front. Reserve this one for after-dinner/dessert sipping, though, and I think you’ll find it just about perfect. It pairs really well with cheese, too.

105 proof.
