Review: Hoodoo Espresso Vodka
We’ve covered various spirits from Jackson, Mississippi-based Cathead on multiple occasions — including everything from whiskey to gin — but this is only the second vodka from the operation that we’ve tasted, following its Pecan Flavored Vodka.
Hoodoo isn’t formally a liqueur but an espresso flavored vodka, made with coffee from Northshore Specialty Coffee, which uses single estate beans from Nicaragua to craft the espresso that goes into this spirit. The finished product contains 50mg of caffeine per 1.5 oz serving, with no other ingredients listed on the label, though demerara sugar is added to sweeten it up.
For all intents and purposes this is an espresso martini in a bottle, though you may also follow Hoodoo’s serving suggestion by shaking it with a small amount of milk to add some creaminess to the experience.
Hoodoo Espresso Vodka Review
Great nose here: It smells like fresh coffee, lightly sweetened. Rich aromas of ground espresso beans pop right away, offering a slightly mocha-heavy character, with dark chocolate notes lingering.
The palate doesn’t really change the game, though the added sugar is immediately noticeable and, perhaps, a bit too heavy for my taste. The coffee flavor is intense but not as strong as the nose connotes, more drip coffee than a classic espresso experience. Gently fruity with some cherry notes, the finish leans toward marzipan and, at last, a bittersweet chocolate element, dusted with brown sugar crystals.
All told, it’s one of the better batched espresso martinis I’ve tasted to date. Those who don’t mind a little extra sweetness will absolutely love this.
60 proof.
