Review: New York Cocktail Co. Negroni
Many world-class bars pre-batch their signature cocktails for efficiency, providing consistent, high-quality drinks at scale. This ensures that guests will always receive the same drink using the exact house recipe, no matter the occasion or the particular bartender making the drink. So it makes sense that at some point demand would be there for imbibers to request bottles to enjoy at home. But it has not that simple. Not only do you have to mix and batch with precision, but for the cocktail to be shelf stable, you have added another layer of complexity.
The New York Cocktail Company was founded to fill a key gap in the ready-to-serve market with offerings of premium made with the finest ingredients by world class mixologists. NYCC products were born from some of New York City’s best bars and cocktail creators. Their aim is for the home cocktail enthusiast to enjoy top quality cocktails with exceptional flavors and consistency in every sip.
The Negroni cocktail has surged in popularity because of its perfect balance of flavors and its classic sophistication. Composed of equal parts gin, Campari, and sweet vermouth, this concoction offers a delightful interplay of bitterness and sweetness, making it both refreshing and complex. Its vibrant ruby color is familiar and inviting. Many drinkers appreciate the Negroni’s versatility; it can be enjoyed as an apéritif or paired with various meals. The drink carries an air of timelessness, often associated with the leisurely Italian lifestyle and culture, which appeals to those craving an authentic and enjoyable experience. With its growing presence in cocktail bars and social gatherings, the Negroni has found its way into the hearts and palates of cocktail enthusiasts worldwide.
This RTD Negroni combines Brooklyn Gin’s citrus-forward gin, Italy’s Mancino Vermouth, Brooklyn’s Faccia Brutto Aperitivo, and Forthave Spirits botanical amaro. Let’s try it.
New York Cocktail Co. Negroni Review
This cocktail offering comes in a 375ml bottle, which should make about four cocktails. The packaging design is sophisticated, with an art déco vibe that has clean lines and is sleek, yet artistic, resembling a large perfume or cologne bottle. If you are a fan of repurposing liquor bottles, you will love this bottle with the embossed glass top.
As I would with a Negroni I made for myself, I poured 3.5 ounces into a mixing glass and stirred with a handful of cubed ice until the glass was cold. I then strained the cocktail into a short glass over a large cube and garnished with an orange peel.
The aroma is exactly what you would expect from Negroni: bittersweet, fragrant with herbal perfume, and a touch of boozy spirit. At first sip, the clean and bright notes of gin emerge, bringing with them a refreshing botanical blend with hints of juniper, citrus, and a whisper of floral undertones. This initial burst includes the distinct bitterness of the aperitivo, which unfolds with a complex medley of herbal, sweet, and fruity characteristics. The bitterness lingers on the tongue, offering an intriguing contrast of flavors. The mouthfeel is smooth yet vibrant, with a well-balanced viscosity that coats the tongue without cloying.
As the drink develops, sweet vermouth enters the scene, softening the sharpness with its herbaceous sweetness. This addition brings warmth and depth, introducing flavors of rich caramel, spice, and dark fruits, reminiscent of cherries or plums. The interplay between the sweet and bitter is dynamic and well-balanced.
The finish is silky, flavorful and lovely. I loved this Negroni, and it was great to be able to mix up a high quality cocktail with one pour. I served this Negroni to my husband without stirring it, just over fresh ice, and it still turned out to be a delicious cocktail served that way. I recommend both methods.
50 proof.
