Review: Laws Super Wheater Whiskey

Kentucky, Tennessee, and Indiana serve as the hub of American whiskey. If asked to pick a state with excellent whiskey outside of that hub, Colorado is a superb choice. Located in Denver, Laws Whiskey House was founded in 2009 and has grown a significant portfolio of whiskey releases. Laws Whiskey House is known for thinking outside of the box with its limited Experiential Barrel Series, but the bulk of production goes into the A.D. Laws and Origins Series. In early 2025, Laws released the newest edition to the Origins Series, its Super Wheater Blend of Straight Whiskies.

Laws Whiskey House Origins Series Super Wheater Blend of Straight Whiskies consists of wheat whiskey and bourbon ranging from 5 to 12 years of age. The new Origins release is a blend of Laws’ flagship four-grain mashbill and wheat whiskey distilled from 100% Centennial wheat. The derived fur-grain mashbill is comprised of 60% corn, 20% heirloom wheat, 10% heirloom rye, and 10% malted barley. Laws utilizes copper pot stills manufactured by Vendome for distillation, running the mash through  a 2,000 gallon stripping still and a 500 gallon spirit still. White dog comes off the still at 125 and is proofed down to 110 with El Dorado Springs water before entering the barrel. All barrels are coopered by Independent Stave Company’s Missouri cooperage with a #3 barrel char.

Super Wheat is actually a blend of 70% bourbon and 30% wheat whiskey. Of the total blend, 31% of the whiskey has been aged from 8 to 12 years. At 20%, the smallest portion of the blend has been aged from 6 to 8 years. And at 49%, the largest portion of the blend is aged 5 to 6 years. Is it worth tracking down? Let’s find out!

The aromas open with the warm scent of freshly baked scones, softly sweet. Notes of cherry soda surface with a slight tartness, balanced by the nutty essence of peach pits. Bright citrus sparkles with a touch of orange zest, adding some freshness. As the nose develops, cinnamon rounds out the bouquet. The palate opens with caramelized notes of brown sugar, followed by creamy almond butter. A dash of lemon zest cuts through, adding a citrusy lift that keeps the profile lively. Hints of coriander arrive to offer an earthy spice that lingers in the background on a full-bodied mouthfeel. The finish unfolds with a drizzle of honey that provides a natural sweetness, seamlessly merging into bittersweet dark chocolate. This rich layer is balanced by a subtle echo of toasted bread that leaves a lasting impression.

Laws Whiskey House has crafted a spectacular blend of straight whiskies here, and Super Wheater is worth every penny of the $130 price. Every aspect of the blend is packed with character and balance. If you’re a fan of wheat-based whiskey, this is one you won’t want to miss, even if wheat typically isn’t your thing. For this release, Laws Whiskey House truly lives up to its mantra of “Whiskey Above All.”

121.6 proof.
