Review: 2019 Mt. Brave Cabernet Sauvignon Mt. Veeder
Hard to believe it’s been 7 vintages since we’ve covered Mt. Brave’s flagship cabernet. This year’s blend is 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot, and 1% Malbec, not a big twist on prior years which ensure that Cab remains fully in the spotlight.
The bold wine benefits from having such a lengthy aging regimen — we’re five years out from harvest now — and it has settled down appropriately in the bottle as a result. Blueberries, blackberries, and currants make for a lovely fruit medley that, unlike my experience with the wine back in 2015, now feels fully realized and ready to pair with your heartiest steak, pork chop, or tofu stir fry. A dusting of black pepper and cloves slowly reveal elements of menthol and a pinch of anise on the finish. Tart, lightly tannic, and round with black fruit, it’s a wine that’s really come well into its own.
