Review: Chardonnays of Trapiche and Mascota Vineyards, 2024 Releases
We’ve spent a reasonable amount of time over the 18 months reviewing and investigating all sorts of wines from Argentina, from rose to the country’s flagship varietal malbec and everywhere else in between, and there appears to be no stoppage in the increased velocity of new releases. This time around, we are taking a closer look at Chardonnays from a label that will no doubt ring a bell to regular readers of our wine reviews, Trapiche, along with a stopover in the vineyards of Mascota to enjoy a final Chardonnay from another familiar sub-brand, Unanime.
2022 Trapiche Finca Las Piedras Terroir Series Single Vineyard Chardonnay Uco Valley – This Chardonnay opens with generous aromas of orange blossom, nectarine, and white tea. Full-bodied and well-textured with layers of citrus fruit, honey and mild oak on the palate gives this considerable complexity, and a mild hint of salinity on the finish wraps things up beautifully. This is one of the best, if not the top, Trapiche white wines on the market, and one of the better representations of Chardonnay from Argentina. A / $53
2023 Mascota Vineyards Unanime Chardonnay – The latest offering from Opi Sadler presents bright aromas of lemon zest and fresh peach throughout, with nuances of lime and vanilla cream in the mix. On the palate, the lemon gradually builds and is complemented by a balanced level of acidity, but both eventually fade as a conclusion of peach and vanilla end things on a lively, engaging note. A- / $20
2023 Trapiche Oak Cask Chardonnay – A straightforward, layered representation of an oaked Chardonnay, this is an expression leaning into its oak influence with notes of vanilla and coconut on the nose, with some citrus eventually cutting through. A palate of lime, apricot and peach gives this Chardonnay a creamy and balanced mouthfeel, with the apricot and spice lingering on the finish. A very affordable everyday wine to consider for accompanying a quick weeknight dinner. B / $10
