Review: 2022 Hahn Founder’s Series Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir

Founders Nicky and Gaby Hahn settled in the Santa Lucia Highlands in the late 1970s. Now in its second generation of family ownership, Hahn Family Wines produces a wide assortment of wines at a variety of price points, including its excellent SLH series as well as the Appellation Series, concentrating exclusively on estate vineyards located in Arroyo Seco. We aren’t reviewing either of these today, but we are looking at two of its latest entry-level offerings: a Pinot Noir and a Cabernet Sauvignon.

2022 Hahn Founder’s Series Cabernet Sauvignon – Opening up very nicely with some time and air, the nose at first is a dominant note of blackberry but eventually cedar and a touch of campfire smoke appear. The nose provides more complexity than the palate, where blackberry is joined by mild cherry, framed by chewy tannins and a good amount of acidity. The finish is lingering and earthy, with the cedar note from the nose returning to the forefront as the fruit fades. A nice solo sipper for weeknights or early evenings, especially with the cedar and smoke evoking the urge to sit at the fireside for a spell. B+ / $16

2022 Hahn Founder’s Series Pinot Noir – A serviceable wine with layered notes of black cherry, plum, and vanilla running throughout. The palate provides balanced acidity and soft tannins, with gentle raspberry and a pinch of baking spice cutting through the fruit. Notes of oak and tea leaves gradually build on the gentle finish, and there’s an earthy quality providing a nice counterpoint. Light on its feet, but still nuanced enough to provide an engaging experience. B / $15
