Review: Wines of J.Lohr, Summer 2024 Releases

Situated in the Central Coast and Paso Robles regions of California, J. Lohr produces numerous varietals at a wide range of price points, including Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. Today we are trying two of its Cabernet Sauvignons and a Syrah whose quality was an unexpected but pleasantly welcome surprise, especially for its asking price.

2021 J. Lohr Hilltop Cabernet Sauvignon – Very approachable, with lively notes of blackberry jam and black cherry giving this cab opulence. Rich but soft on the palate, with fine tannins mixing about with fresh herbs and crushed violet layered between the dark fruit. Notes of dark chocolate and currant on the finish add complexity to an already highly nuanced and harmonious Cabernet. Ready to drink now but will be a delightful companion with the arrival of cooler autumn months. A / $35

2021 J. Lohr Estates Seven Oaks Cabernet Sauvignon – 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Petite Sirah, 4% Petit Verdot, 3% Merlot, and 2% Malbec. Abundant, juicy red fruit is balanced by notes of vanilla and toasted hazelnuts, making this Cabernet feel designed with winter holiday gatherings in mind. Notes of oak and pepper give the wine a savory character and pair harmoniously with the red fruit up front. Mild notes of brown sugar and cinnamon emerge on the finish and push the vanilla forward, no doubt the result of aging in toasted oak barrels. Rich but not overpowering, it is delightful on its own, and even better with a well-prepared steak. A- / $17

2022 J. Lohr Estates South Ridge Syrah – Constructed of 94% Syrah with 4% Viognier and 2% Mourvèdre, this Syrah offers up a lively introduction of berry compote and black cherry, with pepper and some minerality with time in the glass. The palate is even more indulgent with a balanced integration of cassis, blackberry, and baking spice working together towards a lengthy, warm finish. Excellent value at this price point; it pairs very well with hearty vegetables or roasted lamb. Get more than one and tuck them away for a few years. I have a sneaking suspicion it may well be worth the wait. A- / $15
