How Should You Store Non-Alcoholic Wines?

With the NA movement in full swing — and non-alcoholic wines getting better every day — it’s natural to ask the question: How should you store them? How long will they last? And how do you deal with open bottles?

There’s lots of information on traditional (with alcohol) wine storage, but nothing I’ve ever seen on NA options.

So I asked around to find out.

Rebecka Olsson of Oddbird, which makes some of my favorite NA wines, gave me the lowdown. Here’s the FAQ on all things NA wine.

How long will an unopened non-alcoholic wine last?

An NA wine will last about 3 years before the flavor begins to change. Unlike a wine with alcohol, NA wines do not develop in the cellar. For all intents and purposes, they should be consumed as close to the purchase data as possible. Because few non-alcoholic wines are vintage-dated, it may be a good idea to write the date of purchase on the label before you store it.

How should non-alcoholic wines be stored?

Generally they can be stored the same way as regular wines. Long-term storage of white and sparkling wines in a refrigerator or cooler may help them last longer. In general, however, you can keep them in a wine cellar or rack alongside your standard wines. NA wines with corks should be kept on their sides. Screwcapped wines can be kept on their sides or upright.

How long will a non-alcoholic wine remain good after opening?

An open bottle will survive for 2 to 5 days depending on the amount left in the bottle. You can stretch this by using a vacuum pump or other method to remove air from the bottle, but only by a small amount of time. Keep all opened NA wines in the refrigerator after opening whether they are reds, whites, or sparklings. Remember that sparkling wines will quickly lose their fizz once opened, even with a special stopper.
