Negotiating situational abstinence and moderation: a study of regular and heavy-drinking young Nigerians

Highlights new insights on how young people in non-Western contexts negotiate and manage peer pressure and abstain from alcohol or consume lightly on some occasions. Shows how young people’s leisure in mixed-gender social networks encourage situational moderate drinking among young men. Highlights how participants enacted and rejected particular forms of masculinity and embodied gender in their situational abstinence and moderate drinking practices. Provides recommendations on how to partner with young people to design interventions that denormalize social identity constructions with alcohol consumption.
