Rum was once used as currency in the Caribbean and was a key part of the slave trade.

So, I was reading up on some Caribbean history the other day and stumbled upon something pretty wild. Did you know that rum, yeah, the same stuff we put in our cocktails, was actually used as a form of currency back in the day? Crazy, right?

Turns out, during the colonial period, rum was a hot commodity in the Caribbean islands. It was so valuable that it was often used to pay workers, buy goods, and even as a part of the slave trade. Can you imagine trading people for bottles of rum? It’s mind-boggling to think about how different things were back then.

I mean, next time I order a mojito, I’ll definitely be thinking about the dark history behind that sweet taste. It’s like there’s a whole backstory to every sip.

Anyway, what do you guys think about this? Did you already know about rum’s role in Caribbean history, or is this news to you too? Let’s discuss!
