Review: 2021 Trapiche Medalla Malbec and 2022 Trapiche Oak Cask Malbec

When discussing affordable yet quality Malbecs, there are a handful of names consistently standing out. Trapiche is certainly among them, maintaining its presence in the conversation year after year. With International Malbec Day fast approaching on April 17, we’re taking a moment to enjoy two of their entry-level offerings.

2021 Trapiche Medalla Malbec – Initially assertive with concentrated aromas of blackberry, raisin, and dark cherry, things eventually diminish with nuances of vanilla and toasted oak from aging in French oak barrels emerging and providing balance. The palate is full of ripened dark and red fruit layered in between notes of baking spice, toasted oak, cigar box and vanilla, with the dark fruit acting firmly as an anchor throughout. A lengthy finish big on tannins and acidity pushes up a touch of minerality alongside the spice and oak lingering about on the palate. Might not be the worst idea to cellar for a year or so, or at minimum, pair it with a very hearty meal. B+ / $20

2022 Trapiche Oak Cask Malbec – Big and burly aromas of baking spice and blackberry right out of the bottle, and a bit of time in the glass to let matters level out isn’t the worst approach to take. The palate is medium-bodied and approachable, with blackberry and roasted plum balanced by notes of toasted oak and vanilla towards the end. The presence of oak is amplified on the finish, with a balsamic note peeking through by the end. The asking price point is certainly justified, offering a level of complexity surpassing many of its peers within the same price range. B+ / $12
