Genetic component to being unable to drink

Okay so basically some background, I’m 23F and have never been a huge drinker. I have immigrant parents who had a very lax approach to alcohol so it was never “taboo” or something I had to hide. So in a way I feel like their approach to it lead me to be disinterested (in a good way of course)

BUT, once I hit college I wanted to fit in and drink. 18-19 I could drink okay without getting sick. I would never drink to black out or drink more than like 6 drinks over the course of a night. The max amount of times I would drink in a month would be like 2-3 times. So pretty conservative drinking compared to other college students I felt like (mentioning this because I don’t feel like it’s my body’s reaction to TOO MUCH alcohol in my past if that makes sense)

But now? Oh my god. I cannot drink anything without puking. I cannot have any amount of alcohol without feeling sick to my stomach. Last night, I had 4 mixed drinks over the course of 4 hours and it took 12 hours for me to stop puking stomach bile.

My parents are also the same way though sort of (disinterested in alcohol, no desire to drink, and when they do drink they get sick easily) So my questions are 1. If this is genetic (which I think it is) why was I capable of drinking in my teens without getting sick? Why did it randomly start happening?

Is there ANYTHING I can do to make it better, where it’s at the point that 1 mixed drink from a chain restaurant had me hugging the toilet for hours! I obviously don’t really have a huge desire to drink but I would like to be able to have 1-2 drinks here and there when I’m out with friends and celebrating.

I do all of the tips to make it better, drink water before during and after drinking, don’t mix liquors, spread and pace myself, I also try not to order drinks with a lot of sugar

Anyone have a similar experience and can share wisdom? 😄
