How much do you have to drink to smell the next morning ?

I’ve gotten pretty wasted before but have never had people smell alcohol on me the next morning. I’m wondering how much you have to drink for this to happen. Does drinking a lot of water come into play? Or are there other factors…does the type of alcohol matter? How can I avoid smelling?
