How do I become more of a man when it comes to alcohol?

So I grew up in a very sheltered house and nobody has ever taught me about alcohol. My family was always focused on getting grades and a successful career.

Now I am 30 years old, I never had a true experience understanding alcohol as compared to my coworkers and friends. Like they know what is a good alcohol brand and they know what is a good alcoholic drink. My one friend in college told me, “just order cranberry vodka” and that’s a good drink. So that’s what I’ve been ordering for the past 10 years and Budlight. So that’s all I really know.

I feel like less of a man when I put in my order and say I want “cranberry vodka” and they all give me shit for it. So the next time we hang out, I was like let me try to redeem myself. So I said to the bartender, “can I get four shots of bourbon for my friends?”. The bartender gave me a confused expression. Then I played it off by saying, “Nahhhh I was just kidding. I meant bourbon for sipping.”

My friend pulled me aside privately and said, “bro somebody’s gotta teach you about alcohol. You didn’t have a dad to teach you? Cause that was low key kinda embarassing”

So how do I become better at this?
