Why is beer so popular?

I find beer to be too heavy for how low its abv is. If you aren’t drinking for the taste then why not wine or shots or a cocktail? Or do people really like the taste of beer that much? A flat wine feels way lighter to me and really does the job much quicker. I actually think wine drunk is cheaper too if you aren’t too picky.
