Review: Larceny Barrel Proof Bourbon Batch A124 (January 2024)

2024’s first special edition version of Larceny Barrel Proof is here, as always a cask strength wheated bourbon, no age statement.

Larceny Barrel Proof always tends toward sweeter exuberance, and this release is no different, featuring a big bomb of butterscotch and vanilla, garnished with a curl of lemon peel. Toasty oak notes build as the whiskey develops in glass, tempering the sweetness with some savory elements.

Rather familiar on the palate, with caramel and butterscotch leading the way to an overripe banana note — eventually closer to banana pudding — a classic party of the Larceny experience. Silky milk chocolate, more vanilla, and light touches of cinnamon and maple build toward the finish, where peanut brittle, Cracker Jack, and more caramel drizzles await. Touches of coconut cling to the conclusion.

If these tasting notes seem not entirely different than prior Larceny Barrel Proof reviews, that’s because this is a mightily consistent whiskey — much more so than, say, Elijah Craig or Booker’s, which really tend to take things in a variety of directions. Maybe that’s the power of all that wheat in the mash, or just the consistency of the barrel selection, who knows? Either way, this is a slightly more balanced twist on a well-worn formula — albeit plenty sweet — that showcases why people really like drinking Larceny.

124.2 proof.
