Normal alcohol reaction or intolerance?

I don’t drink much and am wanting to start being a bit more social. Everyone in my family drinks like fish but I’m struggling to get past this ‘issue’.

I’ve always considered myself a massive lightweight and just thought that was the reason I’ve never really drunk.

For instance, one bottle of beer will have me feeling dizzy by the end, however this wears off after about 15 minutes and leaves me feeling warm, tired and woozy (like I’ve had a hot bath). I also do get flushed cheeks which points me towards Asian glow (I’m a British white male), however I seem to be susceptible to this anyway as a hot shower or a hot room can cause this.

I’m reluctant to keep drinking at this point as I feel like it’s 0 to 100, I get dizzy quickly but then it fades, is this part normal? It’s like my body has detected alcohol and is ultra aware of it. I feel a little breathless too. I don’t get any high heart rate, if anything it slows down a little (60 bpm).

I’m 160lbs, 5ft10. I’d love to be able to have a few drinks but I’d be out of it a lot quicker than my friends/family.

The first time I ever drank, I had two cans of cider and a sip of vodka and was absolutely gone, throwing up etc. I was 14 but still…seems like a very low tolerance.

Is this something I can work on or do I accept defeat?
