Does alcohol have medicinal uses?

Hello! I’m wondering if alcohol is still being prescribed as a medicine in today’s America, even if it’s in really, really rare cases? Because I heard that a hundred years ago, it was not uncommon for doctors to prescribe their patients liquor. For what kind of illness was it prescribed back then, and is it still the case today? Thanks!
