Review: 2019 Anaba Chardonnay and Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast

Sonoma’s Anaba Wines recently opened a new brunch option in its Carneros tasting room, and while we’re now too far away to easily get there to experience it in person, we did sample two new releases from the 2019 vintage, both from the Sonoma Coast AVA. Thoughts follow.

2019 Anaba Chardonnay Sonoma Coast – Oak is on the heavy side in this coastal chardonnay, though notes of coconut and some melon character manage to perk it up well enough. A brighter acidity would help liven things up more elegantly, but the concluding notes of coconut cream and vanilla pound cake give the wine at least enough to hold on to, keeping things lively. B / $40

2019 Anaba Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast – Earthy and initially tight, this wine eventually finds its footing, letting classic notes of cola, tea leaf, and a pinch of spice come into focus. Brighter cherry notes evolve as the wine spends some time in glass, though the body feels on the thin side. Some graphite notes bring the focus back to the earth as the finish arrives. B+ / $50
