Imported alcohol Inquiry.

Hello everyone. Quick question. Recently met a older German guy who produces his own whiskey and rum. Guy was a former engineer. I really like his product and convinced him to allow me to bring it to the market on US soil. I have no sales experience in relation to alcohol. What steps do you all advise me to take? I am based in Hampton roads, VA. Would selling to a wholesaler be the smartest option? Purchasing a Alcohol import license? Etc. I want to sell it to the higher-end restaurants and bars but am open to other possibilities.
